Popular culture

Florida's water captured the imaginations of artists, writers, and composers all over the world. Fantastical children's literature, evocative music, and gritty non-fiction are all part of the pantheon of literature taking place in and around Florida's waters. The children's literature tended to accentuate the mystery and danger of water. Alligator and manatees alike were hostile beasts. The sheet music devoted to Florida's water tended to evoke the romance of the exotic.
