Tarpon Springs was the world leader in natural sponges, which Greek immigrants harvested in bulk from the calm lagoons and bays of the area. In 2009, commercial and recreational fishing was a six billion dollar industry and by enforcing season closures and successful management techniques, Florida’s fishing industry has a stronger outlook than it has had since the 1950s.
