Title
Greek coffee house ca. 1910s
Subject
Greek coffee house ca. 1910s
Description
This image was probably taken at one of the kafeneia (men’s coffeehouses) located on Athens Street. There is a long-standing tradition of Greek men spending their free time at these establishments, which offered not only coffee but also food and companionship. Indeed, the tiny divers’ cottages that housed sponge crew members in the early days sometimes did without plumbing in part because the men spent all their waking moments working on the boats or at the coffeehouses.
