Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek commuity, Symian Society members pose with Father Karaphillis in 1920
Description
Members of the Symian Society and children gather with Father Theofilos Karaphillis in 1930. Another of the major island groups represented in the Greek community is from the island of Symi. Symians were the first to adopt the skafandro, or the heavy rubberized diving suit with helmet, and were known for their diving abilities. Like Kalymnos and Halki, they were also known for their shipyards.
