Title

Anna Tsoukalas Billiris baptism

Subject

Tarpon Springs, Greek community, baptism at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

Description

Uncle and godfather Theophilos Samarkos hands young Anna Tsoukalas Billiris to Father Constantinos Raptis for her immersion into the baptismal font at St. Nicholas in 1956. Baptism marks the entry of the child into the church, and usually occurs a few months after birth. In the church, the infant is immersed in a baptismal font and the godparents assist the priest in anointing the child with oil. Being chosen as a nounos (godfather) or nouna (godmother) for a child is both an honor and a life-long commitment.
