Sponge Exchange shopping complex
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, Sponge Exchange, tourism
Description
On the site of the old Sponge Exchange, a complex of boutique shops in a faux Cyclades Island architectural style opened on March 16, 1983. Several klouves on the north side of the Sponge Exchange were retained, originally intended for use by sponge fisherman. To highlight local heritage, the owners bought, restored, and displayed the historic sponge boat Apalachicola, which they renamed Aegean Isles. The boat was built in Apalachicola in the late 1920s by Nick Anargiou for Captain James Tsalichis of Tarpon Springs. It was later sold to Miltiadis Galanos in the 1940s, and briefly served as a rescue boat during World War II before returning to the sponge business.
