Title
early sponge packing house
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, sponge industry, sponge packing house
Description
This early image of a sponge packing house is associated with the name Trefon Constantinou. Sponge merchants are central to domestic and international distribution. Many belong to families that have worked in every aspect of the business for generations. In their warehouses, sponges are processed or cut according to order specifications. Some are sold in their natural state, and others are bleached in successive chemical baths until they attain a yellow color. They are trimmed to a size appropriate to their intended function, compacted into bales by a sponge press, sold, and shipped.
