Title
Tsalichis family on a picnic
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, family life
Description
The Tsalichis family enjoys a picnic on Kathara Deftera/Καθαρά Δευτέρα or Clean Monday in the 1941. Anna Karagiannis Kotis looks surprised and perplexed because she has just been handed a live rabbit by her nephew Michael Tsalichis to her left. Kathara Deftera is the first day of Great Lent at the beginning of the seventh week before Easter. It is a day to make a new beginning spiritually by beginning the Lenten fast in which the faithful abstain from meat, dairy, oil, and other foods. It is not a somber day, but instead is celebrated with outdoor picnics, flying kites, merriment, and delicious Lenten dishes.
