Title
Father Tryfon celebrating Easter
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, culture and religion
Description
Reverend Tryfon Theophilopoulos (1935-2005) celebrates Easter at St. Nicholas in 2004. Father Tryfon was assigned to St. Nicholas in December 1975. He was loved by the community, whom he served with wisdom and devotion for 30 years. The resurrection is celebrated with a late Saturday night Liturgy during which the lights are extinguished, and the priest brings out a single candle whose flame is passed to the candles of the worshippers. Guarding the flame, they return home to break the strict 40 day Lenten fast with magiritsa or patsa soups.
