Kitty Scharf Zuchovicki was born in Budapest in 1930 and lived with her Austrian parents in Vienna until shortly after Austria was annexed by the Nazis. She and her family fled to Switzerland, staying there for a few months before continuing on to France. Her father was interned at a concentration camp there, but was able to escape with the help of the camp's medical personnel. The family then sailed to Portugal, where they were turned away; they then took another ship to Morocco, where they stayed until 1942, living with a Moroccan family. A relative in Argentina sponsored their immigration to that country. Kitty spent the next six years recovering from tuberculosis, which was diagnosed shortly after they arrived. In 1959 she met her husband, Saverio Zuchovicki, whose family were Belarusian immigrants. Mr. and Mrs. Zuchovicki lived in Mexico for twenty-five years before coming to the United States in 2002. She is a frequent speaker at the Florida Holocaust Museum.
