Urban University
From the beginning, USF has been different. Even our first student was “non-traditional.” She was married and had children at home. USF has provided education to students that would not have access to a degree without a university in their area.
Early on, USF took advantage of being in an urban area. In 1966 the Learning Center in downtown Tampa opened to benefit unskilled workers. USF students also volunteered to help underprivileged students in the area through tutorial programs. This is just one of many ways the Bulls give back to their community. USF has always encouraged students to get involved in community service and offers students access to these opportunities. The Center for Leadership and Civic engagement provides students with opportunities almost every day of the week and each year USF hosts the “Stampede of Service” which was founded in 2006 and is now USF’s largest day of service.
