Title
sponge hooking schooners
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, sponge schooners on the Anclote River
Description
Sponge hooking schooners, such these docked in an inlet off the Anclote River on October 18, 1973, originally composed a large part of the sponge fleet. The Arty was converted to a sponge boat by George Tsourakis. Although equipment for hooking sponges remained fairly stable, by this time the divers had abandoned the heavy hard-hat diving suits for a modified SCUBA gear with air supplied into the diving mask from a compressor on the boat.
