Title
sponger diver removing helmet
Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, sponge industry, person removing helmet from sponge diver
Description
John Mehas removes the helmet from diver Leon “Roxy” Velousis. Note that the diver is holding a cigarette. Immediately after ascent, divers were often asked to smoke in order to discover whether they were developing decompression sickness. It was commonly believed that if the diver smoked without coughing or shortness of breath, his lungs were not seriously affected by gas bubbles. If they were affected, the diver might return to the water for recompression.
