Subject
Tarpon Springs, Greek community, culture and family life
Description
Nikitas Tsimouris (1924-2001) played the tsabouna, a type of island bagpipe. Born on Kalymnos, he arrived in Tarpon Springs in 1968. Tsimouris worked on sponge boats, in restaurants and the stucco trade, and as custodian of St. Nicholas. He performed Kalymnian music for numerous family, Kalymnian Society, and community events, as well as the Florida Folk Festival. Family members, including his wife Nomiki, and sisters Nomiki, Focaina, and Maria Elena, often sang and danced. Tsimouris received the National Heritage Fellowship in 1991. Tsabouna music is played in complex rhythmic patterns for dancing. Lyrics may be spontaneously improvised to fit specific occasions.
