Exhibition Introduction

Gamma Theta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® invites you to join us as we both commemorate and celebrate our illustrious sorority’s historic anniversary through a rare exhibition entitled, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®: A Journey Through 115 Years of Timeless Service and Sisterhood.

Visitors to the exhibition will journey from 1908 to the present day, learning about pioneering women, historic firsts, and successful leaders making an impact worldwide and locally in Tampa Bay.  Our story begins with nine like-minded, scholarly, courageous, and audacious teenage-aged women who founded Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority on January 15, 1908, on the Howard University in Washington, D.C., campus.

Over the next several decades, the sorority grew exponentially, adding undergraduate chapters, providing mobile health care in the Mississippi Delta during the midst of the Great Depression, serving college-aged students with scholarships, and joining other organizations in social action.

In the 1940s, members of the Gamma Theta Omega Chapter began their journey of service and sisterhood by establishing an Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® chapter in the Tampa Bay Area.  Since its inception, the chapter has implemented countless impactful projects and community service initiatives, including funding thousands of scholarships to area youth and young ladies via the signature Miss Teenage Tampa Scholarship Pageant.

Through the years, the women of the Gamma Theta Omega Chapter have excelled in every profession imaginable, including politics, law, education, and corporate, to name a few, all while committing to servant-leadership and leaving a legacy of service to all mankind in the Tampa Bay community.

As you journey through this one-of-a-kind exhibition of historical facts, documents, and photographs, we ask that you appreciate and celebrate our beloved sorority’s 115 years of service and sisterhood as a measure of all that Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® has meant to our world, county and Tampa Bay community – past, present and future.
