Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® : A Journey Through 115 Years of Timeless Service and Sisterhood Timeless Service and Sisterhood: 2010s- 2020s

2010s

The legacy of leadership from the Gamma Theta Omega Chapter continues with Attorney Carolyn House Stewart elected as the Twenty-Eighth International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® Stewart was also the first lawyer to hold the office of International President. A few of her key imprints during her tenure included:

  • Emerging Young Leaders Program
  • Pink Goes Red Initiative
  • Timeless history project – Chapters throughout the sorority wrote a book about their history, and each book was given an ISBN Number and was added to the Library of Congress
  • Planted 119,000 trees with Arbor Day.

 

The Gamma Theta Omega Chapter continues to inspire and train leaders with the election of Marsha Lewis Brown as the Seventeen Regional Director of the South Atlantic Region. She was the second regional director from Gamma Theta Omega, and under her leadership, the region became the largest of the sorority’s ten regions.

 

2020s

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated® continues to be supreme in service with their historic fundraising efforts of $2.6 million for historically black colleges and universities in one day. Aligning with the sorority's founding principles, the fundraising day provided funds for the next generation of students.

In July of 2022, Danette Anthony Reed was elected the Thirty-First International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated®. Reed’s administration has six initiatives, with a foundation initiative of “Strengthen Our Sisterhood” to strengthen the sorority’s bonds and to support the service mission.

The remaining five initiatives serve as the “Program Initiatives,” which include:

  • Empower Our Families
  • Build Our Economic Wealth
  • Enhance Our Environment
  • Advocate for Social Justice
  • Uplift Our Local Community

 

Gamma Theta Omega continues to serve the community in diverse fields of endeavors, building history in the area, local and statewide. Several members have made historic first in the area and made a significant impact on the community. Some of these remarkable women include:

Peggy Quince, First Black Woman Florida Supreme Court Justice

Gwen Myers, Hillsborough County Commissioner
