Warfare tends to magnify the strategic importance of water, which serves as a battlefield for navies and a vital conduit for transportation of troops, equipment, and supplies. Even in the relatively land-locked Seminole Wars, naval assets played an important role. Although the Seminoles had no navy, Florida waterways and swamps were important hubs of transport for their canoes. The U.S. Navy used naval vessels large and small to disrupt Seminole communications and possible trade with foreign powers, such as the British. The journal of Mervine Mix offers rare insight into U.S. naval activity during the protracted Second Seminole War (1835-42).
