Spanish-American War
In April 1898, the Spanish-American War brought an influx of mobilized troops to Tampa in preparation of the invasion of Cuba. While the generals and journalists enjoyed the luxuries of the Tampa Bay Hotel, the enlisted men sweltered in tents. Racial tensions flared between white and black troops. The unorganized logistical effort resulted in chaos on the railroad sidings and Port Tampa. On June 14, the troops embarked for Cuba, to the great relief of Tampa and the troops themselves.
